Historical account of Russia-Georgia miltarized dispute

As the actual conflict seems to be wrapping up, the Washington Post has a good historical account. This is important for newspapers to do, as often a reader only gets what happened the day before. Good detail.

Story is here.

The NY Times has a good analysis of Russia's strategy for war here.

Also, for the record, it's pretty clear this conflict does not qualify as a "war." For that to happen, according to the popular Correlates of War criteria, there would need to be at least 1,000 combatant deaths. Maybe that many civilians died, but not so many soldiers.

Another note of interest to political scientists: this might qualify as a violation of the "democratic peace," the notion that democracies do not fight each other. The big asterixes here, though, are that Russia might not qualify as a democracy, and the conflict does not seem to meet war criteria. It could be a militarized interstate dispute between democracies, though, and even those are pretty rare.

A project called Polity quantifies the level of democracy of each country for each year, on a scale of -10 (full autocracy) to 10 (full democracy). Generally 6 and higher is considered democracy, and Russia was a 7 the last time I checked. I am curious to see what Russia's Polity score will be for 2008. It has been in somewhat of a downward slide.

  • Greetings Brian and all,

Here's another analysis on the Russia-Georgia shenanigans. Only this one addresses the machinations of the "hidden hands" behind this and other dastardly events.

It's time for people to wake-up to the true nature of the world leaders that have set this thing into motion. It is far more deceptive, contrived, and sinister than most would believe. That is why I have been patiently setting a very unique trap for these snakes. Take the time to understand and then hold their feet to the fire !!!

Time to get a clue, before its too late...

    Peace and Wisdom...
