Veterans Day: Dan Daley

Today is Veterans Day, but also the birthday of the late Dan Daley, one of 19 Americans ever to be awarded two Congressional Medals of Honor.

He was 5'6" and 132 pounds - a newsboy before enlisting - but has been called one of the greatest Marines in history.

From medalofhonor.com, this is part of the USMC lore that keeps his name on the lips of drill instructors at Parris Island:

Dan Daly is perhaps best remembered for a famous battle cry delivered during the desperate fighting in Belleau Wood in June 1918. Marines took a terrific pounding on the outskirts of Lucy le Bocage at the fringe of Belleau Wood. They were outnumbered, outgunned and pinned down. Then Daly made history. He ordered an attack. Leaping forward, he yelled to his tired men, "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?"

Happy birthday and semper fi.
