PBS doesn't care! "Here are the Muhammad cartoons again"

Because I posted about this previously, for the sake of consistency I must report the latest PBS no-holds-barred reportage:

U.S. print media has been quite cautious, mostly choosing not to print these things. But as I said, a Feb. 2 report on "The News Hour With Jim Lehrer" showed several of the cartoons in a responsible context. They had footage of a Muslim who was upset that they were originally published holding up copies of the cartoons for the camera as he talked about how offensive they were.

Tonight, however, while Ray Suarez was talking about them, two of them just appeared, taking up the whole screen. The first was the bomb-turban one, the second one was the more gentle one of Muhammad walking.

So no big deal, but it is a big deal in that no one else is showing the things. Who would have thought that sober, cardigan-wearing PBS would bust these things out for the world to see?

Possibly because they're the only ones who can do it without being accused of ratings-chasing or trying to be X-treme.

Conclusion: PBS is exciting because it's boring!

  • Yeah, I also find it ironic that most major US media won't show them because they don't want to "add fuel to the fire" but seem to have no qualms about showing new Abu Graib photos. I'm sure htey could've done stories about Abu Graib torture scandals just describing, not showing the pictures. Right? If they only care about not "adding fuel" to a controversy.

For the record, I think the Abu Graib torture should be exposed. And so I think the images should be shown, since they're newsworthy. But so are the cartoons. Kudos to PBS! Shame on CNN and the rest.
