Words used in the State of the Union

I love the New York Times. Many people (particularly "bloggers") claim that "old media" is dead or useless, but the Times and other papers continue to use their (massive) resources to produce some fascinating content.

Maybe I'm overstating the value of the tool they created for the State of the Union, but check it out.

One can search all of President Bush's SOU addresses to find the number of times a certain word or phrase was used. Examples:

Iraq - 34 times last night

Afghanistan - 2 times in 2006

Terror - 34 times in 2002*, at least 20 times in each speech since

Oil - not used in 2003, 2004, or 2005

Evil - 5 times in 2002*

Love - not used in 2003

Happiness - never used

Poverty - a total of 6 times, with half of the mentions last night

Social Security - 18 times in 2005**, but in most of the SOUs it was used 2 times

Spaghetti - never used :(

---

Anyway, go have fun using it yourself.

*President Bush was making the case for war in Iraq at that time.
**President Bush announced his plan for SS reform that year. Reforms haven't happened.
