Who's fighting the Russian military? (semantics alert)

New York Times:
The Times is pretty fond of "insurgent." It really has caught on in the past few years, hasn't it? Iraq is the reason. The Times also uses "terrorist" to describe Basayev, which is accurate; he has been involved in terrorist acts. The article also contains "guerilla," which I think is a great term.

"Gunmen," quite specific, is used once or twice and I like it. There's also this line, which uses a term not often seen:

"The thugs who attacked the city's law enforcement establishments today..."

FOX News:
The main FOX News story says "militants" and "rebels," but that is because it is an AP story, and those are terms the AP uses. Look for opinion pieces to use the term "terrorist" almost exclusively. If there are any bombings, watch out for the inane "homicide bomber."

I suppose it's clear that I'm not a big FOX fan, more because of their journalism style than political slant. Regardless, I like to compare/contrast with other sources.

(Side note: When did FOX change its web site design? It went from gross to atrocious. Who the hell designs that thing?)
