Class struggle

This is a personal post.

The topic has been in my mind since an extended conversation at a bar about landscaping, college, childhood, and other subjects that arise when one is drinking.

Class still exists. People can never fully identify with people from other classes. Whether you're a college-bound person working manual labor or a kid working your way through college speaking with kids whose parents pay for their college - it's worlds apart.

I still have a chip on my shoulder about class.

Perhaps college is an equalizer, and it shouldn't matter where you came from or how you got there. But it's not. Unpaid internships in far-away cities are expensive. Clubs and activities at your university are great networking tools - virtually unacessible to people working full-time while going to school.

Ultimately, the conservative in me says, "Where there's a will there's a way. There are scholarships, and anyone can do anything they put their mind to. The American Dream is achievable by anyone."

Yeah. But some people don't have to work as hard to get it, and that's not fair. And others were never encouraged by their parents, "Hey, this is possible."

Ultimately, potential employers won't excuse stains on your clothes at job interviews. You must find a way to get clean clothes. "Find a way" is one of my favorite phrases. It's up to the individual, and I accept that. I'm no Marxist, but there is just a world of difference between the classes.
