Trivial employment considerations

A co-worker whose sister is about to receive her Ph.D in political science said to me:

"My sister is going into academia because she wants to wear jeans and Birkenstocks every day."

Of course most professors don't wear sandals, and there are other factors that affect career decisions, but dress code is one consideration.

Another consideration? Braggability.

Here's a joke:

Q: How do you know if there's a fighter pilot at your party?
A: He'll tell you.

Ba-ding.

There is something to be said for how you feel about telling people what you do.

To some people, it matters more than others.

Other things to think about include:

1. how much time you want to spend traveling
2. how important money is
3. how important it is whether or not you actually "affect change"

Also: whether you want to help the system, change the system from within, or destroy the system.

Note: I'm not thinking about "international relations" in general today as much as: What job do I want specifically and how can I get it?

3 Comments:

  • Have you considered intel?

If your grades are good and you speak another language and spent time overseas, I'd see about CIA clandestine service.

  • My foriegn language skills aren't what I'd like them to be, but I've certainly thought about it.

When I was in the Marines and on a ship, the intel guys were interesting. They didn't have to follow uniform or hygiene regulations most of the time so they had sideburns and shagggy hair.

When we docked at a port, they'd board the ship, and give us a briefing -- because they had been hanging out in the city for the week or so before we got there.
