This has nothing to do with international relations, but if you haven't read it yet...
this guy was shot in point-blank in the temple by a car-jacker, and is apparently doing fine.

It's just slightly scary because I know the neighborhood (a nice part of Denver, someplace you'd feel safe walking around at night). Further scary because not too long ago (this spring I believe) there was a massive manhunt for a serial burglar/rapist in the same area. Perhaps then, it's not so nice an area as it has been made out? I might have to think twice about walking 'round there at night if I ever move back

It's a heck of a balance -- on one hand you're trying not to let fear control your life, but on the other hand you want to be sensible and not get shot. Also, neighborhoods that might already be struggling to attract visitors can be economically crippled by one high-profile crime, regardless of whether it is a freak occurrence or not.
